Staff Help wants to know when we see these error messages as soon as we get them, and they would like a screen shot of the error message if possible. The only error messages they are interested in are those referring to the server being busy, or when Polaris shuts down abruptly (i.e. crashes). It is important to contact the Help desk (x3000) as soon as these errors occur so that Tech Services can more accurately diagnose why these errors are occurring. After creating the screen shot, please print it and give it to me or Cheryl so we can send it to the Help desk (if you are feeling ambitious, you can try to email them directly).
To make a screen shot of an error message:
1) With the error message showing on the screen, hit the Print Screen button on the keyboard (upper right hand corner).
2) Open Microsoft Word (on the desktop or in the Start button menu)
3) Right-click and click on Paste. The catalogs, internet stations and signup queues shutdown at closing. While the print queues shutdown 10 minutes after closing. Customers are warned, 5 minutes before closing, to save or print their work or risk losing it.

If for some reason a customer can not complete their work before closing, it is possible to abort the automatic shutdown. It is up to branch staff’s discretion to determine which situations warrant aborting shutdown. When aborting shutdown you must take into account the following:

• You can only abort shutdown on one computer at a time.
• You must wait for the 5 minute warning to appear on the customer’s computer before attempting to abort shutdown.
• The abort shutdown command only works on internet stations. It does not work on catalogs, signup queues or print queues.

To abort the automatic shutdown of public internet stations do the following:
1. On the desktop of any Information Desk computer, double click on the Abort Shutdown icon.

2. The following window will appear on the screen.

3. Type in just the number of the computer that you want to keep on. For example to keep computer 4 on after closing you will type 4.
4. Press the enter key on the keyboard.
5. After a few seconds, a message will appear on the screen that reads, “Press any key to continue . . .”
6. Hit the enter key on the keyboard to clear the window.
7. On the customer’s computer, the automatic shutdown warning window will disappear and the shutdown process will be aborted.
Once the customer is finished, shutdown the computer manu

GED applications

GED Applications: If customers ask for GED test applications, we may direct them to the website www.bcpl.info. I've created a folder on the WAN under
Cockeysville Public called New Hold Procedures. The location is
\\Ao-ntserv1\departments\Cockeysville\PUBLIC I'll try to keep everything
there from memos to e-mail updates.

Also at the meeting I shared the new procedure that circ is asking us to use
to cancel a hold in transit. Start with the customer's record. Find the item
number of the intransit material, then check it our to "hold shelf -
Cockeysville". When the red box appears, select "charge and satisfy hold".
Simple enough!

Julie

rules - ILL

Effective Monday, ILL will be sending a form e-mail (attached) to customers whose requests cannot be filled. This will substantially decrease their workload as they had been calling each customer when items are not available. Please have librarians try to get e-mail address from customers using this service. ILL will continue to call people without access to e-mail when an item is unavailable. The e-mail form will ask customers to contact their branch if they want to resubmit or obtain alternative materials. You may see some of the forms so we are giving you a heads up.

Just a reminder:
1. On an average it takes 7 to 14 days to receive material that has been requested through ILL.
2. We only get items that are available in the United States.
3. We do not necessarily get the items from the libraries listed on FirstSearch. ILL has access to a list of more lending libraries and the libraries you may see listed may not chose to lend the item. It may not be accurate information if you tell a customer a specific library where the item is available.
4. Please make sure to ask customers how much they are willing to pay if a lending library charges a fee. The most that is usually charged is $25.00. Customers can designate how much they are willing to pay ( nothing, up to $5, up to $10, etc.). The ILL department does it's best to find materials with no charge but sometimes it is impossible.
5. Remind the customers if they designate a fee that they are willing to pay, they are responsible for that fee whether or not the material is picked up.
A manual fine will be attached to their record. This is a new policy and will be discussed further at MACO. In the past BCPL paid the fee and was not reimbursed if the material was not picked up.

rules - cancel hold

1. Also easy to move on to a couple of sites and get them listed on "my del.icio.us"; and they work.

I put several tags on each; however, I will not be using the full potential of this site any time soon. The tags would be a great help to anyone doing some in depth research on a particular topic or someone looking to find another person with whom they had a common interest in some specific area; but, right now, that's not me. I will continue to use del.icio.us instead of my regular bookmarks in case I later want to take advantage of using the tags.

Week 5 - Search My Librarything Catalog

LibraryThing has a very well thought out page of directions, making it an easy site to use when creating a catalog. I just picked 15 nonfiction books that I enjoyed and quickly had them entered. Figuring out how to get things moved to my blog was much more difficult and very very time consuming. Better, easier to follow, directions were needed. As you can see, I first put some random holdings from my catalog on my blog. Eventually I will delete this. The LT Search Box will stay; but until I do a lot more work on some special subject, it is certainly unnecessary.

Week 5 - Librarything Catalog

Week 5 - Search Rolls - Rollyo

<fieldset style='margin: 0; padding: 4px 0 0 0; height: 60px; border: none; background: url(http://rollyo.com/remote/togo-bg-c2.png) no-repeat top left;'>

Select...Arianna's Top Political Blogsgeneral referenceinvestwithcareSearch The Web</fieldset>

Rollyo could be useful. I moved the political search site directly to my Rollyo account and then created a reference site. To actually decide if they would be useful will take time and use. I was disappointed to see that sponsored sites show up in the results list. If you are reading this, you can see that I did manage to get a search box moved to my blog using the "create a Searchbox" tool.

This whole process took far far more time than it should have taken because the directions are very inadequate.

Week 4 - RSS Feeds

Really Simple Syndication is a file format that I will actually use. It is pointless to say that there is simply more information than one needs and/or wants to read because most people are already thinking the same thing. Perhaps my blogline will help me keep up with items of interest because it will make the job easier.

I worked my way through the 21 pages of instructions and subscribed to almost everything mentioned (except 2 noted below) using the various methods suggested. The first exception was podcasts which I started to do without thinking about my dial-up connection and the amount of time that might be involved. Clicking on the stop load button didn't do anything nor did clicking on quit Safari. I was considering pulling the plug; but, fortunately, my very forgiving Mac eventually agreed to force quit Safari. I looked at a lot of the Yahoo groups but decided not to subscribe to any of them.

To see the sites that I did subscribe to, just visit: http://bloglines.com/public/icecreamlover1

So far as ways to subscribe ... copy and paste is easy because I am quite used to doing that. I have put the "sub with Bloglines" on my bookmark bar and that is also handy to use.

Eventually I will remove many of the feeds on my site, winnowing the list down to new, a couple of book related site and a few of personal interest.
